Danger of a Single Story

The consequence of a single story is that it robs people of their dignity. Danger of a Single Story is an adaptation from renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s 2009 TED Talk of the same name. In this learning session, learners will analyze and reflect on the importance of viewing each family story as an individual and unique situation. Learners will explore Chimamanda’s life journey, where she discusses experiences of implicit and explicit bias to help learners examine their own biases. Learners will explore their feelings about implicit bias, identify their own biases, and consider skills they can apply in their daily practice. They will also hear from community members who share how their lived experiences were affected when those meant to support their families' let biases influence their level of support, thereby forever altering the trajectory of their lives. By the end, learners will gather multiple strategies for immediate use to ensure each family they serve receives personalized attention, guidance, and access to resources through intentional, equitable, relational, and culturally sensitive interactions. You will receive a certificate of professional learning time after completing the learning. If continuing education or professional learning is required for licensing purposes, please reach out to your organization or institution to ensure they will accept the certificate.
